Description

Name in Japanese and romaji: 島大臣 Shimadaijin

Notable characteristics: Ruffled semi-double blossoms in the classic ‘Botan’ color of dark purple-red. Vigorous and floriferous.

Hybridizer and year introduced: This cultivar was selected by Kiyo Ikeuchi (池內清) in 1953 in Shimane.

Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Upright habit, grows to 4′ tall and 4′ wide.

Flower form and size: Semi-double blossoms with beautiful symmetry open to 8″ wide.

Flower fragrance: Light, spicy-sweet.

Bloom time: Early-season Japanese tree peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the last week of May.

Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9.
