Nature Center Renovation Fully Underway
Renderings by nArchitects
Construction at Teatown’s Nature Center is now fully underway, marking an exciting milestone in our effort to create a more accessible, sustainable, and engaging space for the community.
Visitors may notice limited construction activity around the building, while behind the scenes, significant progress is being made toward a renewed Nature Center designed to serve the preserve—and the people who love it—for decades to come.
Many of the improvements happening now focus on strengthening the building’s infrastructure and efficiency. Existing windows have been replaced with energy-efficient double-pane windows, and the exterior walls have been thoroughly insulated to improve comfort and reduce energy use year-round. Inside the building, crews are installing structural reinforcements, new interior framing, upgraded electrical systems, and modern HVAC ductwork.
One of the most visible changes is happening on the roof, where new dormers are being constructed to expand the upper level of the building. By relocating staff offices upstairs, the renovation will free up the main level as a fully dedicated visitor space—allowing for expanded exhibits, improved animal habitats, and more room for educational programming.
Accessibility is also a major focus of the renovation. A new elevator pit has been formed and poured, and the opening for a new accessible rear entrance and elevator lobby has been created. These upgrades will ensure that visitors of all abilities can fully experience the Nature Center.
Below the main floor, crews removed underground rock and poured a new concrete slab throughout the lower level, which will house animal care facilities, a classroom, storage areas, and mechanical systems. These improvements will support both expanded programming and enhanced care for Teatown’s ambassador animals.
When complete, the renovated Nature Center will be more welcoming, more accessible, and more energy efficient, providing new opportunities for exhibits, wildlife education, and hands-on learning for our community.
