SUMMARY:Backyard Wildlife: Listening When Females Sing - The Wonders of Female Bird Song
DESCRIPTION:While male birdsong has been extensively studied\, female birdsong behavior remains largely a mystery. Recent research has begun to shed light on females’ songs and their behaviors\, although there is still much left to discover. Join us as we explore the functions\, contexts\, and background of female birdsong from across the world. \nTickets are Pay-as-you-wish starting at $5. \nProgram to take place over Zoom. Participants will receive the access code/link upon registration and an email the day of the event. \nPresenter Bio: \nAr Kornreich is an ornithologist and nature enthusiast from New Rochelle\, NY.  While a Biology major from Queens College (CUNY)\, they studied the differences in song structure between male and female House Finches. After graduating with a B.A. in Biology\, they are currently a PhD student studying at Fordham University\, doing research on the song behavior and territoriality of the Gray Catbird in the mockingbird family. They particularly love hiking and birding on Teatown’s trails and trying to identify birds by sound. \n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Climate Action Boot Camp Part 2
DESCRIPTION:In this two-part in-depth ‘boot camp’\, energy expert Lindsay Audin of Croton will explore how to prioritize and evaluate meaningful climate action projects for the greatest impact. Part I will focus on individual action and highlight household carbon reduction options. Part II will identify community-scale programs with real-world examples of project evaluation processes and tips for garnering support. \nThis is a virtual event. Program to take place over Zoom. \nParticipants will be asked to complete a short assignment ahead of the start date and attending both sessions is strongly encouraged. \nDate: \nTuesday\, November 16\, 6:30pm EST \nTickets: \nELLA (Environmental Leaders Learning Alliance Members): FREE\nEveryone else: $10 per session\nParticipants will receive the access code/link upon registration and an email the day of the event. \nAbout Presenter Lindsay Audin \nLindsay Audin is a Certified Energy Manager (CEM)\, a LEED Accredited Professional (LEED-AP)\, a member of the AEE Energy Managers Hall of Fame\, and has written or co-authored several books on energy issues. His first exposure to the climate issue came in 1976 when he interviewed James Hansen (retired from NASA and now active in the Climate Lobby) on a weekly radio show (called the “Alternate Energy Committee”) he hosted for 3 years on WBAI. \nHe has worked as an energy engineer and consultant for over 40 years\, 8 of which were as the energy manager for Columbia University. For the last 23 years\, he has run his own consulting firm (Energywiz\, Inc.)\, serving large firms that each consume at least $1 million a year in energy. His firm has performed energy studies and upgrades\, benchmarking\, GHG inventories\, renewable power procurement\, utility rate optimization\, and developed software tools for energy use analysis. He has also served as an expert witness on issues related to energy procurement. \nDuring the last 30 years\, over 200 of his articles and presentations have been published. Both in person and via live webinars\, he has taught over 150 classes on energy cost-cutting and analysis to facility and energy professionals. One of the services his firm performs involves reviews of studies\, claims\, press releases\, etc. on energy and climate-related issues. He routinely checks others’ numbers and assumptions for flaws and fakery\, which are unfortunately common. \nFor the last 5 years\, he has chaired Croton’s sustainability committee\, developing local projects for cutting carbon. His recent work has included: securing grants for lighting upgrades\, EV chargers\, and food scrap recycling; developing community solar projects; bringing CCA to Croton; converting home heating systems to cleaner fuels; and analyzing various vendor offerings\, including proposals for solar canopies and a microgrid. \nUnder his direction\, Croton’s committee has performed the most tasks of any community participating in NYSERDA’s Clean Energy Community (CEC) program. In New York State’s Climate Smart Community (CSC) program\, it secured silver (the highest) level of CSC certification. \n\n\nRegister for Part 2 here\n\n\nLearn about Part 1 here

SUMMARY:Film: Symphony of the Soil
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special screening\, via Zoom\, of the award winning documentary\, Symphony of the Soil. There will be a Q&A after the screening with writer\, director\, and producer\, Deborah Koons Garcia. Drawing from ancient knowledge and cutting edge science\, Symphony of the Soil is an artistic exploration of the miraculous substance soil. By understanding the elaborate relationships and mutuality between soil\, water\, the atmosphere\, plants and animals\, we come to appreciate the complex and dynamic nature of this precious resource. The film also examines our human relationship with soil\, the use and misuse of soil in agriculture\, deforestation and development\, and the latest scientific research on soil’s key role in ameliorating the most challenging environmental issues of our time. Filmed on four continents\, featuring esteemed scientists and working farmers and ranchers\, Symphony of the Soil is an intriguing presentation that highlights possibilities of healthy soil creating healthy plants creating healthy humans living on a healthy planet. \nDeborah Koons Garcia has called Northern California home for over thirty years\, with her production company based in Mill Valley\, CA. She has made fiction\, educational and documentary films. For the last fifteen years she has focused primarily on films about agriculture and the food system. Garcia directed the groundbreaking film\, The Future of Food\, which premiered at Film Forum in New York City. The Future of Food (2004) examines the alarming issues surrounding the rapidly increasing corporate domination of our food supply. It is the first major film to cover the history and technology of genetic engineering and the complex implications of releasing such crops into the food environment and food supply. The Future of Food helped jumpstart what is now called the food movement and the continues to play widely all over the world in theaters and at film\, food and farming festivals and conferences and at thousands of community-organized screenings. Her latest film\, Symphony of the Soil\, which is currently in wide release\, was designated a Critics’ Pick by the New York Times and was shown at the United Nations in New York City on World Soil Day which launched the UN International Year of the Soils. visit her website here. \nWhere to View: The program will take place over Zoom. SUMMARY:Virtual Book Discussion: The Home Place
DESCRIPTION:The Home Place: Memoirs of a Colored Man’s Love Affair with Nature is a memoir written by ornithologist and professor of ecology at Clemson University\, J. Drew Lanham. Lanham’s memoir reads like a collection of essays detailing his keen observation of nature; the land and sky surrounding his rural South Carolina home comes alive through the eyes of a born naturalist and bird-lover. We get a rich understanding of who he is as a black man in the American south\, a home he shares with others who look and act differently than he does\, yet who share his love of nature. Lanham reflects: “Home\, after all\, is more than a place on a map. It’s a place in the heart.” \nJoin Marie Roche and Nadya Hall for a discussion of this moving memoir and the inequities of black identity in America today\, especially in the environmental field. \nProgram to take place over Zoom. Participants will receive the access code via email the day before the program. \nPre-registration is required. Registration available until noon the day before the event. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister
