SUMMARY:Seminar: Connecting Conservation to Global and Local Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:Teatown’s Dr. Amy Karpati will kick off the Fall Sustainability Series with an introductory presentation entitled “Connecting Conservation to Global and Local Sustainability.” Dr. Karpati will talk about sustainability from a biological conservation perspective\, the conservation issues we face at Teatown\, and the importance of Teatown’s work within the context of regional sustainability. \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker\nDr. Karpati’s role at Teatown is to oversee and integrate our science\, stewardship\, and education work.  Amy holds a doctorate in Ecology & Evolution from Rutgers University and a master’s degree in Adolescent Education from Pace University.  She worked for several years as a conservation biologist and environmental advocate in the New Jersey Pinelands\, where she helped to protect the essential ecosystem services\, species\, and habitats of the region.  Amy has also been an adjunct faculty member of Columbia University’s Masters in Sustainability Management program since 2012\, where she teaches a course in urban ecology.  Her research and education work has focused on biological conservation\, ecological restoration of urban ecosystems\, plant ecology\, sustainability\, and strengthening community connections to the natural landscape. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrograms require pre-registration. DESCRIPTION:Overabundant deer populations are one of the greatest threats to forest regeneration and biodiversity in the Lower Hudson Valley\, but multiple approaches are available to address this conservation concern. \nPlease join us in learning from regional experts and land managers about overabundant deer and the methods used to manage them.  Dr. Allen Rutberg\, Director at the Center for Animals and Public Policy and Research Assistant Professor for the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University\, will discuss the Hastings-on-Hudson deer immunocontraception program.  Additionally\, Dr. Chris Nagy\, Director of Research and Land Management at Mianus River Gorge\, will give an overview of deer overabundance in the region.  Hillary Siener\, Teatown’s Manager of Science and Stewardship Programs\, will discuss the deer management program currently in effect at Teatown. \n \nOnline registration available until noon the day before the event. Do you want to learn long-term mitigation and management strategies for Hemlock Woolly Adelgid or Emerald Ash Borer (EAB)? Do you want to become involved in efforts to monitor pests\, block pathways of introduction or locate EAB-resistant ash? If your answer to any of these questions is “yes”\, you should come to the Invasive Forest Pest Workshop at Teatown Lake Reservation in Ossining. \nThe workshop will include presentations on emerald ash borer (EAB)\, management\, an opportunity to get involved in Managing and Monitoring Ash (MaMA)\, a citizen-science project to identify EAB-resistant ash\, a talk on management issues of hemlock woolly adelgid and elongate hemlock scale\, and an introduction to the Tree-SMART Trade approach to preventing future forest pest invasions. \nThis workshop is open to the general public\, municipal leaders and members of conservation boards.
