SUMMARY:Gardening with Native Plants Workshop II
DESCRIPTION:Let’s go native!\nGardening with native plants in our suburban landscape has many environmental benefits. Join landscape designer Amanda Bayley\, co-founder of PLAN it WILD\, for a presentation on how to beautify your own yard with native plants. \nAmanda will be presenting for the first hour\, followed by a tour of several gardens at Teatown that showcase examples of the ecoregion concept. This includes: \n\na visit to Wildflower Woods\, a newly planted woodland area with plants that typically grow in this ecoregion\nan area of lawn replaced with mountain mint as an example of a pollinator pathway patch\, or stepping stone\, making the connection to larger habitat areas that may be in different ecoregions\na brief tour of Wildflower Island\, which is home to an assemblage of plants both cultivated and native to this ecoregion\, highlighting the idea that ecoregion gardening is not purist\, and can be successfully integrated into your garden with other plants that are not from this region but that still provide some form of habitat value.\n\nFor adults.\nThis program is generously funded through the William and Henriette Granville Suhr Fund for the Environment\, a fund of the Westchester Community Foundation.\nPrograms require pre-registration. Online registration available until 24 hours before the event. If online registration is not available\, call (914) 762-2912 x110 to register. \n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Amanda\nAmanda has more than ten years of experience in designing natural areas and green infrastructure in NYC and its suburbs\, working for the NYC Parks Department\, the Natural Areas Conservancy (an environmental nonprofit) eDesign Dynamics (an ecological engineering firm)\, and residential design & build firms. She has a Master’s in landscape architecture from The City College of New York\, a sustainability analytics certification from Columbia University’s Earth Institute\, and currently serves on the Town of Cortlandt Conservation Advisory Council. She recently co-founded PLAN it WILD to transform lawns\, backyards\, corporate parks\, and town centers into high-functioning\, beautiful habitat.

SUMMARY:Pinelands: New Jersey's Suburban Wilderness
DESCRIPTION:A self-taught and award-winning photographer of the New Jersey Pinelands\, Al Horner uses his artistic skill and eye for natural beauty to help others see the magic of this ecosystem and spark their desire to protect it. Al will share visuals of his work and talk about how he uses photography to show the importance of the Pinelands to the region and to the world. \nPrograms require pre-registration. Online registration available until 24 hours before the event. If online registration is not available\, call (914) 762-2912 x110 to register. \n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Albert D. Horner\nAlbert D. Horner is an award-winning fine-art photographer whose images distill the quiet beauty and intimate landscapes of New Jersey’s Pinelands National Reserve. Self-taught\, he brings curiosity\, patience and a practiced eye to his craft\, recording the oak and pine forests\, cedar swamps\, meandering waterways and native wildflowers that make the “Pine Barrens” a place like no other. “Although the Pinelands does not have mountain peaks or lush valleys with babbling streams\, it does have a beauty and uniqueness all its own\,” says Horner. \nHorner began taking 35mm photos as a hobby\, working first in black and white and then in Kodachrome. He visited scenic locations in the United States and abroad\, but wasn’t quite satisfied with the images he produced. Horner soon realized he needed a subject close at hand where he could monitor light and weather conditions in all seasons. For the Medford Lakes\, N.J.\, resident that subject was the Garden State’s Pinelands\, a place he had explored since childhood. \nSince 2005\, using digital photography\, Horner has produced more than 150 stunning images taken in the 1.1 million-acre Pinelands National Reserve. Some 80 of these fine-art photographs appear in his 2015 monograph\, “Pinelands: New Jersey’s Suburban Wilderness.” A Pinelands Preservation Alliance board member\, Horner uses his art to advocate on behalf of the ecologically important region\, giving presentations and exhibiting his images. \n\nPartners

SUMMARY:Seeing Nature With My Brush: The Art of Jerry Pinkney
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Thomas Kristich\nJerry Pinkney has illustrated over 100 children’s books\, including classics like The Tortoise and the Hare\, The Lion and the Mouse\, and Twinkle\, Twinkle\, Little Star. A recipient of the Caldecott Medal\, five New York Times “Best Illustrated Books” honors\, and five Coretta Scott King Awards\, Jerry’s work engages readers with rich drawings and paintings of people\, animals\, and environments. Jerry has used several of Teatown’s animal ambassadors as models for his illustrations! \nCome learn about Jerry’s approach to connecting people to nature through illustration and storytelling. \nPrograms require pre-registration. Online registration available until 24 hours before the event. If online registration is not available\, call (914) 762-2912 x110 to register. \n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJerry’s Artist Statement\n“A sense of community has always been important to me\, and I want that to be reflected in my art. When I speak of community\, I am not only talking about the immediate world around me\, but also legacy. I am always searching for projects that connect with my culture and the experience of being Black in America. \nI love the act of making marks on paper\, and seeing those marks develop into a picture. How rewarding it is to just sit\, observe\, and paint! But I am a storyteller at heart\, which is why I was drawn to picture books. Each project begins with the question\, “Is this story worth telling? Is the manuscript an interesting read? Is it surprising and challenging? Will I\, in the process of making pictures\, learn something new?” With these questions answered\, I let the text speak to me. The style in which a story is written will offer me clues and give direction. \nWhen I am working for children\, I aim for clarity with a direct correlation between text and art\, but I still illustrate stories not as I imagine a child sees them\, but how I see them. My work is my life’s vocation\, yet it is also the way I get to speak about interests and passions\, the immediacy of drawing and my love of painting. What drives my narratives is the search for order\, symmetry\, beauty and emotion. I want to lead the viewer into my imagination—a world that exists inside these pictures. I have illustrated over a hundred children’s books\, and my wish for each one is that all ages will be able to find something that touches them in some way.” \n\n\nJerry’s Website\nPartners

SUMMARY:Artist Reception: Judika Lieberman
DESCRIPTION:Judika’s work will be on display in the Visitor Center in April and May. Please join us for the opening reception; all are welcome\, and refreshments will be served.\n\n\nJudika’s energetic abstracts in acrylic contain an echo of natural\, organic and biomorphic forms. Her figurative work is impressionistic; the texture is impastoed with a vibrant color palette\, encompassing the broad scale of the color spectrum. Influenced by Kandinsky\, she believes in the interrelationship between art and music that drives her creative inspiration.\n\n\nArtist’s Statement\nToday\, more than ever\, Art Must Live On! As artists\, we have the obligation \nto be the guardians of beauty\, and have the responsibility to show its’ reflections to the world. My art has been influenced by Kandinsky. I believe in the interrelationship between music and art\, which drive my creative inspiration and spirituality. \nI strive to discover new avenues to express myself. Each piece is unique\, and is musically inspired. My figurative work has been a departure from the 19th century French Impressionists\, with a 21st century slant. The paint application is usually heavily impasto in texture\, with a vibrant color palette\, encompassing the bright end of the spectrum. All of my canvas’s come alive by using lots of color and texture in an effort to create 3-dimensionality and movement. \nWith this creative spirit always in my heart and mind; I hope to energize\, bring joy and enrichment to my audiences for a brief interlude. The work has been reviewed and compared to Lee Krasner in “ART SPEAK” Magazine \n\nMore from Judika

SUMMARY:iMapInvasives
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDo you know what’s lurking in your backyard? How can a phone app help fight the spread of invasive species? iMapInvasives is a collaborative database designed to collect and share information about invasive species. The information that is generated is used to map where these invasive species are and how scientists can effectively contend with them. Citizen Scientists (that’s you!) are an essential part of this puzzle – making a difference with just a couple of clicks! Please join Teatown Educators as we walk you through the iMapInvasives program and introduce you to a few non-native invasive species. For everyone.\nRegister\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\nPrograms require pre-registration. Online registration available until noon the day before the event.
