SUMMARY:General Interest Meeting: Hudson River Estuary Eel Project
DESCRIPTION:American eels are migratory fish that are hatched in the Atlantic Ocean and enter rivers as tiny “glass eels” each spring. The species is in decline over much of its range\, and baseline studies are needed for conservation. Teams of citizen scientists collect glass eels using nets and traps in over a dozen Hudson River tributaries from Staten Island to Troy.\nTeatown educator Marie Roche will explain how juvenile fish are counted\, weighed\, and released to better upstream habitats\, often above dams\, and how you can help protect this critical species by joining the Eel Project as a volunteer.\nFor adults.\n\n\nRegister\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\nPrograms require pre-registration. Online registration available until noon the day before the event. If online registration is not available\, call (914) 762-2912 x110 to register.

SUMMARY:Volunteer Training: Amphibian Migrations & Road Crossings
DESCRIPTION:On rainy nights in late winter and early spring\, many salamanders and frogs travel long distances from their forest habitat to breed in small wetlands called “woodland pools.” Unfortunately\, many are killed by vehicles when their migration pathways cross roads. \nYou can help! \nVolunteers are needed to help these amphibians across dangerous road crossings\, and collect data for the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. \nBecome a real citizen scientist as you learn amphibian identification and are provided guidance on data collection methods and safety measures. \nFor adults. \nFor more information about the Amphibian Migrations & Road Crossings Project\, visit http://www.dec.ny.gov/lands/51925.html. Questions can be sent to woodlandpool@dec.ny.gov. \n\nA Project of the NYSDEC Hudson River Estuary Program and Cornell University\nSign up
